PPC, Geotechnical investigation, Greece

Project Description

Geotest has been selected to perform a comprehensive geotechnical investigation at the South Field of the Ptolemais Mine and the broader Megalopolis mining area. The goal of the project is to support the evaluation and potential implementation of a pumped-storage hydroelectric facility by determining the geotechnical suitability of the proposed construction zone.

The scope of work includes both sampled and non-sampled boreholes, combined with the installation of advanced geotechnical instrumentation, such as:

  • • Inclinometers for slope displacement monitoring
  • • Multi-level vibrating wire piezometers for groundwater pressure monitoring

The data acquired from this investigation will be used to model slope stability conditions, assess subsurface stratigraphy and hydrogeology, and inform the engineering design of future infrastructure.

Project Challenge

The investigation covers active and former mining zones with variable subsurface conditions and safety constraints.

  • Deep borehole drilling with both disturbed and undisturbed sampling
  • Complex stratigraphy in post-mining environments
  • Installation of high-precision monitoring systems (inclinometers & piezometers)
  • Integration of real-time instrumentation for long-term monitoring

RESULTS

Soon.
